chocolate walnut banana bread (egg-free, sugar-free, whole wheat)

A few days ago, I realized that there is no simple banana bread recipe on this blog! My kids do not like simple banana bread; somehow the taste of just wheat and banana does not appeal to them. I have date syrup with me, so this time when I found 2 overripe bananas with us, I made a chocolate version, sans sugar. This combination turned out to be really moist and delicious. Now, everybody in the house loved it!

Love it Apsara and more so the fact that you used date syrup instead of sugar. How was the texture?

    • August 16, 2014 at 11:15 pm

thanks, Sonal. The texture is cake-like and moist, almost like when molasses or syrup is used.

Hmm, another healthy treat for today’s FF. I am happy to indulge this – I am not going to feel guilty after a few slices. 😛 As I said to others before, I admire how people turn recipes into healthy ones. I have not eaten banana bread without sugar, but I can see the date syrup made this banana bread sweet and moist. Am I right?

Thanks for bringing this and I assure you that this is loved by the FF crowd. 😉 Enjoy the rest of your weekend! <3

Love this Apsara! I have just recently discovered date syrup, it is such a wonderful substitute for sugar, isnt it?

Yes, it is so easy to use too!

    • August 19, 2014 at 8:31 pm

Yes, this is super easy. I don’t know why I did not make it earlier!

  • August 19, 2014 at 1:22 am

with 2 overly ripe bananas in my fridge, it is a happy coincidence I stumbled over your recipe!

  • August 19, 2014 at 3:19 am

A lovely, simple and healthy recipe for banana bread, Apsara -thank you so much for bringing this to the party, it has been much appreciated by all! Do you know (roughly) what the proportions are when subbing date syrup for sugar? Have a wonderful FF and a great week!

  • August 19, 2014 at 8:38 pm

I’m so glad you like it, Selma. I would have used the same amount of sugar (if using raw sugar) or slightly lesser (refined sugar). In this case, I went by the sweetness and consistency of the batter and added extra date syrup in the end, just before pouring in the pan. You have a great week too!

Ever since I started adding cocoa to my banana bread I can’t eat it plain anymore! This looks awesome 🙂

  • August 20, 2014 at 10:17 am

Looks divine, Apsara! I am definitely gonna try it out soon. Thanks for sharing ☺

This was just amazing. I was a little worried with the omission of eggs despite which it turned out really well even with a few alterations that i made. Used 3/4 whole wheat flour and one cup coconut and oat flour mix, more of coconut. Also added 2 or 1 tbsp yogurt and put in 4 mediumish bananas. Date syrup was substituted with honey. This ones a keeper. Will follow original recipe next time as family not fond of bananas! More for me! 😀
