Fruit and Nut Granola

We like having granola for breakfast cereal, especially the kids. Big fans of the Cascadian Farm brand of granola. But once I realized that it is so ridiculously easy to make at home, I’ve started  making it often.

My proud moment came when my daughter decidedly pointed at the object pictured above and said “I want the one from the jar! (not from the box)”

I’m taking this simple snack for folks to munch while enjoying other food at our virtual party at The Novice Gardener’s Fiesta Friday #17.  A big Thank you to co-hosts Selma, Jhuls and Alex! 🙂

fruit and nut granola

  • Servings: about 6
  • Time: 35 minutes
  • Difficulty: very easy

Ingredients:

Quick oats- 2 cup

applesauce (unsweetened)- 1/2 cup

maple syrup- 1/4 cup

sea salt- 1/4 tsp.

raisins- 1/2 cup

chopped dates- 1/2 cup

slivered almonds- 1/2 cup

pecans- 1/3 cup

vanilla extract- 2 tsp.

Method:

1. Preheat oven to 350 °F.

2. Add all ingredients in a mixing bowl, stir and transfer to an aluminum cookie sheet lined with parchment paper.

3. Bake for 15 minutes, shake around the granola and bake for another 15 minutes. Keep a watch so as not to burn, these are the quick-cook variety of oats.

4. Cool and store in an airtight jar.

    What a wonderful snack idea for Fiesta Friday ….especially since it is an all night party this time! 🙂 so wonderful that your daughter prefers your homemade stuff …I’m sure that was an encouraging moment Apsara! Looks great!

    Oh gosh I agree! I make homemade granola weekly and am super obsessed with it…. It honestly tastes so much fresher and flavorful than store bought anyways. Yours sound delicious….Love the pecans in yours..they are my favorite nut 🙂

    Apsara, this looks so great and is so easy – the recipe I use has things like bran wheat and some other not run of the mill items so I tend not to make it very often. This though, I could make now! How lovely that your daughter prefers it. Thanks for sharing this with us – happy Fiesta Friday!

    I usually buy my granola but your homemade version sounds so easy, probably cheaper and you use the ingredients you want 🙂

      True, it does make it a lot cheaper. Reduces packaging too. I wish I always had the energy to make everything at home 🙂

    The granola looks great, Apsara 🙂 I also add ground flax seed to my granola recipe while cutting down on the dates and syrup to make it more diabetic-friendly.

    It is always music to my ears when somebody ask me to serve something homemade for them. And I know what you feel about your daughter asking for homemade granola. I always get the ones from the box, but when I get my hands on all of the mentioned ingredients, I’d definitely make my own granola. 😉

    I’m excited to try your homemade granola recipe as snack options for myself when I’m on the run. It’s way healthier and I think it’s so cute your daughter likes yours over the box! 🙂 Question: how long will the granola last in an airtight jar? Thank you for a healthy & yummy recipe, Apsara! 🙂

        It’s good to know it lasts for 2 weeks! I’m thinking for my upcoming trip In July to pack my own homemade snacks, instead of buying “healthy snacks” from boxes and packages. It’ll be quite an experiment and I’m glad to have your recipe on my list! 🙂

    I saw your post at the right time Apsara. I am out of all the snacks and just ughhhed by store bought ones. I might borrow you recipe and make it a savory and spicy version. Loved it.

    Never thought of homemade granola, what a good idea! I tweaked it a bit by adding various other fruits and nuts and it was yummy!! Instant hit with my kids too who usually don’t like the store bought granola!Awesome..

      Really delighted that your kids liked it. Somehow, my kids have got too used to seeing me ‘make’ things that they sometimes ask me only for store-bought goodies. 😉
